The Self Knowledge Symposium (SKS) is a resource for students engaged in the spiritual search. Asking the big questions—who am I? Why am I here? What can I do with my life that will be meaningful?—is an essential aspect of the successful college experience. The SKS supports students in their quest for a meaningful life through a network of student organizations, as well as lectures, workshops, retreats, conferences and new residential programs in downtown Raleigh.

The educational philosophy of the SKS draws extensively from the work of August Turak, which defines a methodology for self-directed, open-minded inquiry into oneself, through action, reflection, and dynamic interaction with one's peers.

The SKS community includes students, educators, alumni, and many others interested in spiritual seeking.

The SKS is an educational 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

OK, you've gotten that far: hungry for more? Here are a couple of great places to explore that will give you very different perspectives on what SKS is and does.
SKS Email conversation
SKS Founder Augie Turak's Brother John paper, which won a $100,000 prize from the John Templeton Foundation's worldwide "Power of Purpose" contest, is a deeply spiritual document about faith and the miraculous.

Augie's I Do and I Understand paper is closer to the nuts-and-bolts, describing the SKS model of community, personal transformation, and grace.

In this spot I always post a recent email conversation. In this case, what you're getting is a dialogue among several current and former SKS members inspired by a Beliefnet article about how to deal gracefully with aging; the article came to the attention of Nicole, who is working in a retirement community, in her twenties but dealing daily with old age and death. From there, you can click to other past email conversations we've had.

And if you still can't get enough, here are still more ways of answering the question "What is SKS?"

Chapters of the SKS

There are three student chapters of the Self Knowledge Symposium. Each chapter meets weekly: one on the campus of Duke University, one at North Carolina State University, and one at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Click here for times and locations of these meetings.

We also sponsor events, talks, and retreats, many of them available to both students and adults. Click here for a list of current events.

"The SKSF provides a compelling new model for the spiritual search today, especially for young people who are hungry for meaning. They're a spiritual community without monastery walls, but nonetheless committed in their profound desire for God." --Fr. Francis Kline, O.C.S.O.
