SKS Spring Break 2005 at Mepkin Abbey

Monk at Mepkin

"To say the least Mepkin was a transforming and amazing experience."

"All in all the experience at Mepkin cannot be captured by words because it was blessed by something far beyond words."

"For me, going down to Mepkin was like waking up. I had been absorbed in a dream of classes, parties, and homework for so long that I had forgotten that anything else existed."

"Mepkin as always, is a quiet sanctuary, where the Spanish moss, beautiful gardens, and bountiful nature help take away your everyday worries and stresses. For it is at Mepkin that I could truly push aside worries about my classes and other problems and really think about God and my life as a whole. That is why I've chosen to come here for spring break three times."

Interested in doing something transformative over spring break? Mepkin Abbey is a Catholic, Trappist Monastery located in Moncks Corner, SC, along the banks of the beautiful Cooper River. This is your chance to directly experience and benefit from this 1500-year-old tradition dedicated to silence, contemplation, and Union with God. His Trappist life inspired Thomas Merton to write the autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, which, after the Bible, is the widest selling Christian text of all time.

You have the opportunity to sing, pray, walk, and work alongside the monks of the abbey, who are willing to share the wisdom and serenity each finds living a life spent in perpetual prayer and community.

We will take two trips this year.

Students from NC State will depart at 10am on Friday, March 4th and return late afternoon Friday, March 11th.

Students from Duke and UNC will depart at 10am on Friday, March 11th and return later afternoon Friday, March 18th.

"I am not a monk, but I spend enough time at Mepkin Abbey that Father Feliciano introduced me to a visitor recently and followed it with, "He's always here." I am often asked why I go. I go because Brother John loves God so much he doesn't know what to do with himself. He doesn't know what to do with himself so he stands outside on a cold Christmas night with an umbrella waiting. Waiting to offer us some protection and human comfort on our long journey home."
